What is General Labor?
You may hear general labor described as a job that is “non-skilled.” This, of course, is not true! You do need skills: a good work ethic, dedication, reliability, sound judgment, etc. But “skilled” labor refers to those in the trades, such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, drafters, and machinists. A general labor job entails tasks such as cleaning, removing debris from job sites, moving items, landscaping, loading/unloading boxes, setting up/taking down scaffolding, and running some types of equipment and tools.
This may be the right fit for you if:
- You are willing and able to do physical work. Many people find the idea of sitting at a desk all day to be… well, too awful to think about!
- You like working as part of a team.
- You prefer a less formal work environment. Often, there is a “dress code” for general labor jobs, but this includes items like appropriate work boots or PPE. There’s typically no need for a suit!
- You want to enter the workforce without crushing debt. While peers may be struggling under crushing student debt, you’re earning a paycheck, learning your field, and deciding on your next steps.
- You want a career with opportunities for advancement. General labor gives you a great feel for the construction industry. You can advance within a company or explore related paths, such as those in the skilled trades.
